First Birthday Video! :)

Here is a video I made for Millie's 1st Birthday Party!
It's pretty long, but pretty amazing at how much she has grown and changed in the last year!

Another Element of Motherhood!

A sick baby!  This is an element of motherhood that no one can prepare you for, no matter how many books you read and how many birthing classes you go to!  It doesn't matter how much advice seasoned mother's give you, when it's your baby that's sick, there is a part of you that is sick too,  your heart.  Last week Millie had quite a rough week which means Mama had a rough week too.  Here is how our week went:
Monday: She had an okay day but didn't seem to have as much energy as usual.  She loved playing and was going about normal business.
Tuesday: She slept just about all day.  Even fell asleep on the floor of the play room at the babysitters!  (Anyone that knows Millie as her "normal" self, knows that she doesn't just lay down on the floor to take a snooze!)  She was running a fever in the evening between 101 and 103.  Call the doc to make an appt for the morning.
Wednesday:Doc appt in the morning, he said she had an ear infection.  He didn't get too good of a look because she did not like the idea of someone poking in her ears and throat.  He prescribe amoxicillin. She spent the day at home cuddling with Daddy and napped most of the day.  Still a slight fever.
Thursday: Spent the day at home with Nan-Z.  Started to get a prickly rash on her belly and back along with puffy face/eyes.  I called the doc when I got home from work to see if there was something we should do.  They wanted to see us that night.  Appt at 7:30 with the same doc that she saw the day before.  She wasn't anymore fond of him this time! He did get a good look in her ear and confirmed it was an ear infection.  He said the rash was not a true allergy because it was not like "hives" but more just a side effect of the meds.  He switched her prescription and we were out the door. (Most people know we are bed time routine followers, and this appt was long after her bed time!)  Needless to say she was not a happy camper and just wanted to go to sleep.  ****This is where the longest night EVER begins!  She started screaming around 8 :30 and didn't let up until about 1:30AM!!!!  We tried everything from rocking, walking, music, snacks, playing with toys, watching mickey, laying down in mommy and daddy's bed, putting the pack and play in our room, NOTHING worked!  Finally, mom took her upstairs around 1:45 and somehow got her to sleep.  At least for a few hours!  (THANK GOD FOR GRANDMOTHERS!!!!)
Friday: I was so out of it at work, but Millie seemed to perk up a little.  She took long naps, but when she was awake she wanted to play.  No fever.  However, the rash seemed to be getting worse.  As I'm reading the text messages while at work (shhhh, don't tell) I broke down!  Not only was I questioning why I was at work instead of home with my sick baby, but why was she not getting any better even after the medicine change? I called the pediatrician and she reassured me that it would take at least 3 days for the first meds to get out of her system and that she may have the rash for another few days.
Saturday/Sunday: She still had a bit of a rash and was fussy off and on throughout the day.  She didn't have a fever but still had the rash.  I also made a discovery.  TOP TWO MOLARS!!!!!  Can't help but think that this little discovery could be contributing to my little girls misery!
Monday(Today):  The rash seems to be mostly gone!!!  Still not her "tornado" self, but I think we are on the up and up!

What a week!  Like I said there isn't anything that can prepare you for the times when your kid is sick.  I'm so lucky to have the people in my life that helped not just Millie, but helped me through it too!  We have been so fortunate up until now to have such a healthy and happy little girl!  You never realize how much you treasure your sleep until you miss it for a night!

***I will post another update in the near future about how life has changed for our little family in the last few months: a 1 year old, a walker, a working Mommy, a babysitter, etc. :)

Still 11 Months: Mama's Job!

So the month of the July is jam packed with things going on in our family.  As you know from my last blog, I got a job in Exeter Township as a third grade teacher.  Anyone that knows me, as a teacher, knows I have already been in to work on my classroom.  Now, let me just start by saying the room was in serious need of some TLC, but in my three days that I have been there, I have already grown to love the space as my own.  I don't have too much to say, just thought I would share some pictures of my little piece of learning space!

11 Months: Slow it Down!

Ok, at the request of my grandmother, I'm going to blog today.  I haven't forgotten about this, just have had many other things going on since the last time I wrote!

Me: I interviewed at two school districts and was hired in Exeter Township School District as a full time 3rd grade teacher for next year. While I have loved my time home with Millie and have felt very blessed that I could be with her this whole year, I'm anxious and ready to get back in and do what I was made to do, TEACH!  It was not my intention to be home for this year, but I'm glad it worked out that way.  But here goes nothing, diving in head first to a small room, no supplies, new standards, and all new co-workers.  It should make for an interesting adventure!  I'm excited that I will be working with third graders because I love that age, they still have a hunger for learning and like to come to school!  (Not to mention they think the world of their teacher! You are still cool!)  I promise to get you some before and after pictures of my classroom once I can get in to work.  Another project of mine has been our veggie garden. Last year we planted the seeds right in the ground, well rocks, and didn't get anything.  This year Joe put together some raised beds and I started my seeds inside and my garden is doing great.  We have corn, green beans, peppers, squash, lettuce, broccoli, onions, and peas planted.  So far I have picked some peas and squash but everything is looking great!

Joe:  Joe has been busy at work, it seems like they always have a new job lined up when they finish one, thank goodness!  He has been working hard around the house to help make it feel more like our own.  We finished our deck, added some new flower beds, bought some more furniture, and did some painting.  There are always projects to be done when you own a home!

Millie:  Can you believe it, she is going to be ONE in just a couple weeks!!!!!!!!  We are busy planning her first trip to Ocean City and her first birthday party.  Of course we are anxious to celebrate with all our friends and family the fact that we have kept her alive and healthy for A WHOLE YEAR!!!!!!  She still only has 2 teeth and is doing a great job figuring out how to eat with only two of them!  She loved to eat whatever Mommy is eating and will often try what we are having for dinner.  She is cruising around using furniture or the walls to hold herself up, but hasn't taken any step of her own yet.  She will stand on her own but sits down after a few seconds.  She is such a good baby and is always happy, she has started this thing where she smiles, crinkles up her nose, and snorts like a pig!  What a goof ball!  She just wants to be outside and enjoys her pool and going on her swing set.  We recently took a trip down to Atlantic City to visit with my cousin and her Godmother Maria!  We had a lot of fun!

41 Weeks: Mother's Day!

There is something precious about the squeeze you get from a 9 month old.  There is something precious about the way she rubs her nose into my shoulder when I tuck her in at night.  There is something precious about the few times I can take her out of the car and she will sleep on my shoulder until I can get her into her crib.  There is something precious about the way she tries to give a kiss, but actually just gets slobber all over me and tries to bite me. There is something precious about the way she smiles and squeals when I walk into the room after being gone for the day.  It's her, my baby girl, she is precious.

My first time holding Millie Raine!

As my first Mother's Day approaches, I can't help but reflect on all the ways my life has changed since July 29th.  I have been mentally keeping this list throughout the week:

  1. I have learned how to shower, dry off, and dress in less than 10 minutes.
  2. I have learned how to tune out a crying baby to do those things listed in number one!
  3. I have learned how to hold my breath long enough to change a stinky diaper.
  4. Our trash cans now have fabreeze air fresheners in them.
  5. Date nights are few and far between (but that's okay because I love having Millie along when we go out)
  6. Going to the grocery store is down to a science, so it can be done quickly.
  7. I have mastered the art of pureeing just about anything.
  8. Bathing suit season is even more scary now!
  9. I now know you must travel with snacks.
  10. People want to come to your house, but it's really just to see your baby!
  11. You have a new appreciation of what nap time means.
  12. Packing to go away for the weekend, looks more like you are going to be gone for a month.
  13. You really wonder how a diaper holds all "that" in.  But are thankful it does!
  14. Mickey is a life saver.
  15. You do whatever it takes to make her happy, even if it means walking up and down the drive way a million times in a play car.
  16. You learn who your true friends are.  (the ones that don't mind that your baby is along when you go out to dinner, or will bring dinner to you)
  17. Anything Mommy eats is what baby wants, no matter what time of day, or what the food item is.
  18. I appreciate my husband so much more. (Who runs to the store, helps with dinner, deals with all my projects, watches Millie so I can have some Mommy time, loves his daughter unconditionally etc.)
  19. I have learned to love someone so much more than myself, and more than anything else.

So this Mother's Day, there is really no gift out there that could be better than the one that I was given on July 29th.  She is the best thing that has ever happened to me, and is such a blessing.  I'm not perfect and I have so much to learn about being a Mom, but this is a journey that I'm glad that I'm on.

So to all those out there that mother is some way: those that have their own children, those that adopted children  those that foster children, those that lost children, those that teach and care for children... HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

37 Weeks: It's official!

My "baby" is on the move.  Millie is officially crawling and exploring!  She knows now that she can get herself across to the room to get to something she wants which is also known as, won’t stay put! Now it didn't happen overnight, but she is a quick learner and it didn't take her long at all. It all started with her getting up on her knees and rocking back and forth, however when she went to move forward she would just belly flop onto the floor.  Then it moved to shuffling forward and then taking a break.  Somewhere between the rocking and shuffling and now we have mastered what I call the "Ruawl" the running crawl! She crawls so fast and gets so excited that her arms and legs don't quite coordinate themselves and she ends up belly flopped again. She really is a lot of fun now because she is following you wherever you go and is now able to choose what she wants to play with.  It is interesting to see what peaks her interest among the small toy store we have in our house. :)

Bath time Fun!
Love these pretty blue eyes!

Sporting my new hat!
She also has another tooth on the bottom, so that makes two now. She is so cute when she smiles and you see those two little teeth in there.  It's really hard to be in a bad mood when she is around, such a ray of sunshine!
2 teeth!!!

Getting some fresh air!

Spring has Sprung! I love this time of year because we can finally get outside and get to work on all of our projects.  Josiah started the deck last fall but with the brutal winter the project was put on hold.  We are back on track and having wood delivered this week!  I'm super excited!  The deck at our house in VA was one of my favorite projects that we did!  :)  We also spread fertilizer and grass seed in hopes to get our lawn in better shape this year.  Green grass is one thing I don't have the patience to wait for!  :) I started my vegetable seeds inside last weekend and already have some cucumbers sprouting!  Our plan is to make some raised beds since our soil is basically rocks.  This way we will have plenty of fertile soil for the veggies this year.  My goal is to plant: cucumbers, peppers, green beans, peas, lettuce, broccoli, onions, squash, corn, and maybe some strawberries.  :) Wish us luck!

Update on Grammy:   It has been about 7 weeks now since her surgery.  She is at home with a live in nurse/aide to help her get around and do the things that all of us with two good legs take for granted!  She went to the doctor this week and got really good news from the plastic surgeon.  He said that the wound is healing nicely and he removed the last of the stitches that were still in there.  They had originally thought that they might have to do a skin graft but he thinks after yesterday’s visit there is a good chance that won’t be necessary.  (Great news!)  She is slowly putting a little more weight on her leg and learning how to get around with a "straight" leg.  Her foot and ankle are pretty sore because they have been out of commission for 7 weeks, but the doctor reassured her that this was all normal and will get better with time.  She is waiting to hear back from another doctor about the results of her x-ray to see if her broken tibia has healed yet.  (Still praying for that one!)

34 Weeks: Tooth Fairy

Well Little Miss Millie is 34 weeks today and her first tooth started coming through on Tuesday of this week!  That little thing is sharp!  She has been her usual happy self through all of it.  We only had one night this week where she woke up crying and wanted to cuddle for a little.  (Which Mommy is alright with from time to time! Don't tell Millie that!)  It is just amazing to watch her grow and change so much from week to week.

I am still working at the middle school, which has been such a change from my 4th graders I was working  with last year.  I am enjoying it more than I thought I would.  I am working with the gifted students so they come to be during one of their class periods throughout the day.  They are working on a wide range of things from creating solar cars, getting ready for a natural disaster e-mission with actual NASA employees, to learning the physics of roller coasters and other amusement park rides.  The teacher that I am subbing for hds surgery last week and is planning on being out until April 5th.  We don't know too much more beyond that.  (Whether she will return on time and if she does if there would be something else for me to do at the middle school.)

While I am at school, Millie is spending most of her time with Ba (my step-mom Ann) and her cousin Callen!  We can't forget Pa (my dad!) who comes to meet me each morning and helps Ba during the day.  She seems to be adjusting well and all is good.  (Hate to say it but it does make me a little sad that she can go wit on without Mommy there!)  :)  But I'm also very glad that she is so well adjusted and is happy no matter where she is!  My Mom also helped out this week and stayed here at home one day with Millie.  I love that she is getting to spend the time with family and we just feel so blessed to have all the help!  :)  Callen is doing a great job with Millie, he is working hard to teach her how to crawl and all about trucks and diggers.  I'm sure he is very entertaining for Millie, much more than Mommy and Daddy!

We had a little Easter Egg Hunt for the kids in the development yesterday and the Easter Bunny was even there!  We took Millie along with our nephew Regen.  They had a blast.  Millie was very interested in the Easter Bunny and always was watching him.  She didn't quite know what to do with the eggs on the ground but Regen was an egg hunt professional!  :)  Just like his Aunt Niki used to be.   :)  Here are a few pictures.

32 Weeks: Momma got a Job!

You read it right... I got a job!  Just for a few weeks, but it's a foot in the door if nothing else!  It is at the same school that I interviewed at 2 weeks again, just a different position.  As the gifted teacher!  YIKES!  I start on Wednesday when I will shadow the current teacher for a week and then she will be out for 2 weeks.  The director of HR said that if she needs to be out longer, I will stay as long as she is out.  But he also said that if she returns after the 2 weeks, there may be another long term position for me to slide into as the Title I teacher.  So we will see.  I'm glad it gets me back into a school and working with kids.  Even though it is at a middle school and out of my "comfort zone" I think it will be great and I'm really excited about it!

On the other side of the scale is the fact that my daily time of feeding, playing, singing, dancing, and acting goofy is take a vacation while Millie spends her days with her Ba and Cousin Callen.  I know she is going to have a blast and is going to learn so many new things, but I'm going to miss my little bugger.  If I think about it for too long I start to get a little emotional because, I mean come on, who wouldn't miss something so cute!  We will both be great but could use some prayers to make the transition on the first few days smooth.  :)

Hanging outside on a beautiful day.

7 Months: Catch up

Ok I realize it has been about a month since I have updated our blog and there has been a lot going on in our little family!  Let me start by saying Little Millie is growing like crazy and is doing new and fun things everyday.  She is "talking" more, mostly saying "la, ya, da"  :)  She continue to be very curious about everything around her.  She wants to touch and taste everything that she sees.  We try to allow her to explore safely and have found that she will eat just about anything that we eat.  (Keep in mind we have only let her have a little lick of something to get the flavor, but we haven't found anything that she doesn't want more of, including lemons and limes!) She isn't crawling yet, but is doing the barrel roll to get from point a to point b and is becoming pretty proficient at it.  We try every day to get her gut off the floor and to get up on her knees, but she quickly does a face plant into the carpet and just continues to roll to where she wants to go.  It is pretty crazy how big she is getting and how fast it has all happened.  I get a little sad to think about taking her "little girl" clothes out of her drawers to put "big girl" clothes in!

My Job Hunt:  As most of you know I have finally after 10 long months received my PA teaching certificate! Woo Hoo!!!  What a process and a pain in the neck!  I have actively or some might say obsessively been searching school districts online for open positions. At the beginning of Feb I expressed interest in a position with a local school district for an Instructional Support Teacher.  However, I didn't hear anything back from them for a couple of weeks, so I didn't really think any more about it.  However on Feb 22nd I got a call to come in for an interview on Monday the 25th.  That day I met with the principal of the school and the HR director and found out more about the position and told them a little about myself and my employment history.  The interview went great, even the two of them said I would be a great fit for the position.  The next day I got a call to come back for a second interview on Thursday the 28th.  (There were only two of us called back for 2nd interviews.) At the second interview I again met with the principal and two of the reading specialists at the school and I was reaffirmed that this would be an amazing opportunity for me!  However it is now Tuesday March 5 and I haven't heard back from them.  I guess it is safe to say it wasn't meant to be. It is disappointing for sure, but it was great to get back into the swing of interviewing again.  I am just try to keep reminding myself that it is a blessing in disguise and that I get to spend more time with Millie Raine now!  :)

Grammy Schantz (Big Millie):  I have to start off by saying my Grammy is such a strong lady!  She is always trusting in God and positive no matter what comes her way, she really sets an amazing example!  Well as you know she had open heart surgery last August after falling at her house.  Well since then she has been in and out of the hospital mostly for a wound on her knee that just will not heal.  She has been cut open several times and each time not hearing very good news.  She finally went to Philly to get a second opinion and they told her mostly the same thing that her doctors at home were telling her.  (The options aren't great!) After much praying she decided to have surgery to take her prosthetic knee out and have an immobilizer put in.  (Knowing that in doing this they were going to say and see if the wound would heal and then try to put another knee in.)  However during surgery they had a very hard time to get the prosthetic knee out and broke her Tibia in the process.  So now she has to be off of her leg completely for 6 weeks and there are a lot of unknowns after that!  So please keep her in your prayers.

28 Weeks: Wiggles and Giggles

Ok, I know I'm not blogging every week anymore, but holy smokes, time is flying!  How is my little girl already 28 Weeks/6 Months old!!!!  Half a year has gone by since the days that I was laying around the living room anxious about contractions starting and dreading labor and delivery!  Now my little munchkin is sitting across from me in my living room, playing with her toys and making all kinds of noises! She has changed my life so much and I just never imagined loving something so much.

She recently had her 6 month check up at the doctor where she weighed in just under 15 pound (30th percentile) and measured at 27" (90th percentile).  So not only is she going to look like her Daddy, she is going to be tall and lean like him too! She was again a champ when it came to the shots, crying for only a split second until I could pick her up.

She is eating a wide variety of foods and a lot of it!  And the moving has also begun.  She really does not like being on her belly so getting her to work on pushing herself up has been a chore.  She usually performs a combination of rolls, wiggles, and inch-worm-type moves to reach what she wants to.  She gained the balance to sit over night (really it was that fast, it was crazy!), so I don't think it's going to be long before she realizes that if she wants something across the room, she can get there without Mommy's help!  She also has mastered rolling and often rolls during her naps.  We will put her in the crib one way and when she wakes up she is usually turned over and in some other direction. (often with her legs in the air along the side of her crib)  She has learned to blow raspberries and often finds it funniest to do them while she has a mouth full of food.  She laughs at everything especially peek-a-boo and if you tickle under her chin.  I love everyday I spend with her!  :)  No teeth yet, but still tons of slobber and drool!

We had a little photo shoot the other week to put together her Valentine's Day card!  :)  Here are a few of the pictures.
